2022 THESIS EXHIBITION
IMPRESSIONS TO INHERIT
EXHIBITION STATEMENT
As I sorted through my dad’s belongings, many years after his death, I opened a tin of his hair pomade.
Inside were perfect impressions of his fingers, and—after years of not seeing him or hearing his voice—there he was.
Our lives are cyclical. “Impressions to Inherit” focuses on those objects, moments, and experiences that are left and then returned-to in time. We are surrounded by roundness in scales shifting from the planetary to the atomic. This work exists as in-between portraits of more tangible circles that we use, leave-behind, and then return to: reminders of the intangible connections we share.
These prints have a back-and-forth attitude toward linear abstraction versus realism, which focuses on my “hand” in each moment of the work, and reveals a trace of myself in each rendering. Every impression is an invitation to observe a flattened moment, and to reflect on both individuality and the passing of time.
Looping through the paper of each image is an emboss of my own enlarged fingerprint. These lines echo
the rendered items they frame as further evidence of lived experience. The resulting body of work exists
as the marks of a shared lifetime: touching, moving on, and returning again.
